In a competitive research environment, Martin Luther University ensures gender-equitable and non-discriminatory research conditions. It is aimed at achieving gender balance in research and it implements and supports measures to eliminate existing disadvantages for female scientists.

Martin Luther University is committed to equality-oriented, transparent, and sustainable promotion of early career scientists to provide the best possible support for outstanding female and male academics at every qualification level.

Creating a gender balance in academia and research

Equal opportunities measures for female and male academics/researchers are an integral part of research funding. The university prioritizes the promotion of early female researchers in the qualification phase from the doctorate to the habilitation or junior professorship/tenure track professorship and upon appointment to a professorship.



  • Application counselling with regard to the development of project-related equality and diversity aims and measures as part of the research application process by the Diversity and Equal Opportunities Unit

Establishing gender research as a cross-cutting research topic

Gender research is to be implemented on an interdisciplinary basis as a cross-cutting topic for the profile lines ‘Transformation, Sustainability and Knowledge Culture and Education’, taking into account the transfer of research results into the development of strategies and measures.


Creation of attractive teaching and research conditions for qualified female academics/researchers

The Martin Luther University is working to create attractive teaching and research conditions and to reduce existing disadvantages. To this end, it aims to increase transparency for qualified female scientists.


Establishment of a gender-equitable and gender-sensitive leadership culture and human resources management

Gender equality and gender sensitivity are established as central requirements of a university management culture and important criteria for staff recruitment, selection and Human resources development.


Increasing the proportion of women in management and top positions at the university and on university committees

The strategic objective is to increase the proportion of women in leadership and top positions and on the boards/ committees. This requires a proactive appointment and staffing policy. The university is committed to promoting research by women at all career levels and develops appropriate measures to support their research activities.
